So, I made cards…

All right, this isn’t a fabric related post; however, I’m still writing about it since it’s still craft related. This past Friday, we celebrated my BF’s sons birthday. He turned 19 on on May 3.

I figured cash would be a suitable gift and so I hunted around to find an appropriate card. There was only one thing wrong… I found out that I was down to my last handcrafted card. Uh oh! It was a simple white embossed card that I’d made years ago. Also, there was no envelope. Oh no! Since I didn’t have time to make an envelope, I simply tucked the cash inside the card and stuck everything into a small gift bag.

However yesterday, I started making some cards.

The above cards are simple to make, which meant no sketching, stamping, embossing, etc., was done; however, I will be getting a bit more elaborate later this week. I’ll make a few birthday and holiday cards.

While I was making cards, my daughter was beside me sketching and later she started playing World of Warcraft. It was a wonderful way to spend our Sunday and I hope we have many more of these lazy days.

Can’t Hardly Wait: Maryland Sheep & Wool Festival

This weekend, I’ll be attending the Maryland Sheep & Wool Festival!

Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival

I had no idea it was this weekend until a few days ago. I found out about the actual dates of the festival when I went on to their Facebook page. Of course, they had the event date plastered on their page. I completely forgot about it in 2014, and by the time I’d remembered, months had past. I wanted to attend in 2013; however, I had prior commitments.

So even though I knew, after viewing their Facebook page, it did leave me in a bit of a quandary. Why? Saturday is usually the day that my BF and meet and do something with my daughter. Later that day, when I talked to him, he asked me if I wanted to attend the Maryland Sheep & Wool Festival! I hadn’t told him about the event. Ok… now I’m impressed. He told me he had seen a sign advertising the event, on his way home from work. It’s being held at the Howard County fairgrounds, which is about five minutes away from his home. It’s over an hour from where my daughter and me live.

I will say that I’m thrilled that he wants to share in my love of fiber arts. The poor man, he has no idea what he has talked himself into. The good news is, that my daughter will be there so even if he does not say, “Opal are you ready to leave?” My daughter will definitely whine, “Mom, can we go now?” Sighs…. kids! 😉

20+ years later, I’m still wearing this…

These pictures were taken yesterday, right before I took my daughter to the Middle School dance at our Lutheran church.

You see the polka dot dress I’m wearing?

I dislike taking pictures, but I wanted to show how the dress matches my shoes!

I made that dress in my early twenties. I think I might have been 22? Fast forward 22 years later and the dress still fits.

The dress is a perfect match for those shoes I purchased, right?

This dress, was one of the first knit dresses I made successfully on my standard sewing machine. For some reason, I feared knits and avoided them like the plague. Okay… maybe there was a reason. In my teens, my first attempts at making something with stretchy knit fabric did not go very well. I shudder thinking about those leggings I attempted to make.

The past few weeks have been incredibly busy and so while I had every attempt to sew, that wasn’t happening! Which explains why my daughter’s dress (shown in the above picture) was purchased instead of being sewn by me. Sighs… Oh well, the Middle School concert is coming up at her Lutheran school. I have two weeks to design/sew a dress for her. I should be able to start sewing this coming weekend.

Tambour Embroidery: And so it begins…

Yesterday, when I arrived home from work, I was thrilled to see that my  small tambour embroidery frame had arrived.

I did not have a chance to set it up last evening, since I was hanging out with my daughter most of the time; however this morning, I made that a priority after the all important things like feeding my daughter, getting ready for work were out of the way.

The above video shows how to make a basic chain stitch. Normally tambour embroidery is done on fabric that you can see through. Actually, I can with the above fabric that I’ve chosen. If it is an issue, I’ll chose a fabric where the holes are more visible.

The good news is that it looks like I’ll be practicing tambour embroidery later today. Yes! I can’t wait.

Tambour Embroidery

You know… I promised myself I would slow down on the new crafts, but here I go again learning something new. Well, to be fair embroidery is not new to me and it’s something I’ve been doing since I was about eight years old. However, in the past, I’ve always used a embroidery needle. Until now.

A little backstory…

I am surrounded by some lovely, talented enablers in life and online. Some of my online pals, from an advanced sewing group I’m a member of, got me a new way to embroider using a tambour needle. I checked out a few videos and noted it was faster than the embroidery needles that I’m used too and they used that needle to do the same type of embroidery that I’ve been doing for years.

Of course, that got my attention since I love incorporating embroidery onto various items and so I’ll be learning a new way to embroider. I’ll mainly be using the tambour needle for beaded embroidery. I love adding beaded embroidery to various items, my favorite being clothing. I have a few pieces that are very intricate. The most tedious piece I have is a maxi gown made solely of beads. That took me over a year to complete.

Since I already love beaded embroidery, I did not purchase one item to see how I would like it, I bought everything I needed to make my transition to tambour embroidery as easy as possible. The tambour needle was the first purchase, because I can’t obviously do tambour embroidery without a tambour needle, right?

I also purchased a large hoop, like the one shown in the video. This is perfect for large beading projects.

However, I also wanted a much smaller embroidery hoop that I can use in my lap, and so early this morning, I ordered the small Lacis Tambour round frame. This will be perfect if I want to carry my project with me. I most likely would bring it when visiting the BF, at his home, and he’s watching something that I have no interest in, such as baseball. I don’t watch a lot of television. Days, weeks and months can go by before I turn on the TV. The BF is already fascinated with my knitting, so I’ll be interested to see what he thinks about my tambour embroidery.

I did not need to purchase beads, thread or the appropriate cloth since I already have plenty in my crafting supplies.

Take a look at the above video. Isn’t that amazing? I can do that with a simple beaded needle, but I’m still learning how to embroider with my tambour needle, so it’ll be some time before I develop the speed and accuracy needed to match what I can do with a simple embroidery needle.
