Tulle and a petticoat; Let’s try this again…

Here’s another view of the same tulle petticoat pictures that I posted earlier today. However, I believe you can see the skirt a bit better with the darker background.

since I’m using a darker background.

This is a lovely project. I believe I’ll embroider these daisies again, next time I’ll use metallic thread; silver and pink. Part of me will be sad once it’s complete, but that’s fine. I’ll be designing more petticoats.

All that glitters; tulle and a petticoat

Sewing through the hand basted tulle

When working with tulle, I usually hand baste first before I even think about doing any type of machine sewing. Why? Tulle is a slippery fabric and while I know you can use tissue paper to help with this, I still prefer hand sewing even if that means it takes more time. I love hand sewing, for me it’s therapeutic. I don’t need electricity to create something beautiful. Just the basic tools and time of course.

Shimmery and slippery tulle!

How much hand basting are we talking about? It was a little over 50 yards of tulle, I hand sew fairly quickly, but that still was a lot. This petticoat has three layers of tulle, each layer was secured to the one above with the hand basted stitches. Afterwards, I went back and sewed those stitches with one of my sewing machines. In the above photo, I was using my Brother PC420 Project Runway.

My daughter loves watching the progression of her outfit. Since tulle can be slippery, I decided it might be best to have her working with fabric that isn’t as challenging. She readily agreed.

Yesterday evening, I added the embroidery. You can see the same picture with a different background here. The detail shows up much better at the one I’ve linked.

Embroidery on petticoat

Here’s a close up of how it appears near the top of the petticoat. My daughter chose a simple floral design from Urban Threads. I believe I’ll finish the petticoat today. Later today, I’ll work on the dress, but for now I do believe I’ll take a tiny break. The elastic needs to be added to the waist and the actual petticoat needs a hem. For the tulle, I believe I’ll add a rolled hem, which means I’ll have to use my serger machine.

Would I have done anything differently?

In hindsight, I would have used chiffon for the actual petticoat, but that might not have been a great idea since I added the machine embroidered flowers? Well, it would have been doable, but I definitely would have needed a thicker stabilizer. I will be making other petticoats, the next one will most likely be for myself.

Time to mark – I prefer the floor

Although I have a lovely table to do all my cutting, marking, etc., I still prefer using the floor. My daughter tells me, it’s because I don’t have far to go. I’m 5′. Yes, she’s got jokes!

Oh, I’m wearing my favorite cold sweatshirt. It’s seen several washings, and has bleach spots in a few places, but I still wear it around the house.

My daughter also told me I have too much hair. She said, “Mom, I rarely get your face when I’m trying to take a picture!”  My reply, “I’m not the subject the material is the focal point!”

She took this several hours ago. In the picture, you’ll see the beginning of a petticoat that I’m creating for her. I was adding additional marks (with my chalk pencil) for embroidery placement. Since that time, the embroidery was added (with much success I might add) and I’ve also hand basted one layer of tulle ruffle to the petticoat.

I still have about 30 more yards of tulle to do.

Purchased fabric/accessories on Black Friday

This morning, shortly after 6:00 a.m., my daughter and I were at JoAnn Fabric store. We were taking advantage of their Black Friday Sale.  As I already mentioned, this the first time that I’ve been to a store on Black Friday.

These days, I rarely purchase fabric from JoAnn, most of my fabric shopping is completed online. However, there’s a Middle School dance coming up next Saturday and I did not  feel like taking a chance on getting a package that might not arrive on time.

I didn’t feel like drafting a pattern for my daughter, so she looked through the pattern books and chose the above pattern. Besides, working from a commercial pattern will give her a feel for what that is like and it help her in making sizing adjustments.

This fabric shimmers, my daughter is loving it a lot!

Here’s the fabric that she chose. She then reminded me that she wanted a lace bolero top to accompany the dress

and so she choose this.

Here’s a closer shot of the lace, with it spread out so you can see the design a bit better. I’ve never been overly crazy about the lace offered at JoAnn’s, but my daughter likes it a lot so as long as she’s happy that’s what matters, right?

She wasn’t the only one that purchased material though. They had Christmas themed fabric in the 70% off bin and I allowed myself one selection.

Look, it’s Charlie Brown! I’ve always loved the Charlie Brown Christmas movies. I did notice that this  Charlie Brown print is devoid of any Christmas sayings. Perhaps that is why it was marked down so low? It’s not something I’m overjoyed about myself. But I’m guessing someone thought this would be a great way to avoid the risk stepping on anyone’s overly sensitive toes.

Notions 11.28.14

Besides fabric, I still needed to purchase a few additional sewing notions and I purchased what you see above. These notions along with the items that should be coming from Amazon tomorrow will keep me in accessories heaven for a long time.

We were in the store for about an hour and the majority of that time was spent waiting for our ticket to be called so we could get our fabric measured and cut. Yes, it really was that crowded in the fabric store less than 15 minutes after it opened. People were lined up with carts filled with fabric. Apparently there were some awesome fabric deals going on and that’s not surprising, after all… it is Black Friday!

Black Horsehair Braid
Black Horsehair Braid

Oh… I did have to order one thing online for my daughter’s dress. Horsehair braid! I ordered it from Wawak, based on their turnaround time, it should be here within a few days.

A few hours after arriving home, I serged the raw fabric edges and then washed and dried the fabric. This is standard procedure for any fabric that enters this home and yes that includes dry clean only fabric also.

Happy Thanksgiving 2014

Another Thanksgiving has arrived (a first for this site) and  I have more reason than ever to be thankful.

In everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

Today has been a super duper lazy day for my daughter and myself. Besides pulling out a half finished knitting project, gazing wistfully at my loom, cooking a Thanksgiving meal for my daughter and myself, I have done absolutely nothing but rest! You know… sometimes our bodies need that.

Black Friday Deals – One Day Early

Early this morning I did go online and fill in a few sewing accessories gaps. Much to my delight, some of the items on my Wish List were discounted because of Black Friday. A few moments ago, I hopped online and it looks like I’ll be receiving the bulk of my items on Saturday. I’m an Amazon Prime member.

Early Shopping on Black Friday

Tomorrow will be the first year that I am planning to go shopping at an actual brick and mortar store on Black Friday. Early tomorrow, my daughter and I will be going to Jo Ann Fabrics to select a suitable pattern for a dress she wants to make. She  has an upcoming dance next week. Tomorrow, JoAnn’s will be open at 6:00 a.m.

Accessories Update

Once my sewing accessories arrive, I’ll be sure to post a picture of my “sewing accessories haul,” and give reasons why I purchased each one. I’m trying out a new to me product, a fabric folding pen. I did order three more of the Clover Chaco Liner.

chakoner

I must say, that I like it more than my Chakoner that you see above. I’m really loving the Clover Chaco liner pencil. My only regret is that I haven’t purchased it sooner.
