Sewing: Everything old is new again

My goodness has it been busy. This evening while watching, The Bible series, I finally started knitting with my handspun yarn.

The yarn post that referenced the yarn was accidentally deleted by myself and I have not gotten around to recreating that yet, so here’s a picture of the yarn. I’m knitting a cowl!

The above picture was taken this past Sunday. It’s a picture of my daughter, boyfriend and myself. The dress I was wearing, was something that I designed and sewed in my early twenties. 20+ years later and I still wear that dress.

Midnight Blue Wedge Heel

Last year, I found shoes that matched the polka dot dress perfectly! The dress is simple, comfortable and I really like the dress. The only drawback is it isn’t colorful. I love color.

Tailoring: Pants alterations

I would say that alterations are my least favorite part of sewing, followed closely by cutting out the actual pattern. I don’t mind making the pattern, in fact I enjoy that part immensely; however, actually cutting the fabric is something I like to complete so I can get to fitting my muslin and eventually moving on to sewing the actual garment.

Making pant alterations

Here’s what I was working on last week! Pant alterations for my father. After much prodding, he finally got around to giving me several pants that he wanted altered and so Thursday I spent the entire morning making the alterations. Later that day, I delivered the pants to him. I must say that he was thrilled with the fit and even modeled a few for me.

Sadirons on woodstove.11.14.15
Two of my sadirons on top of our woodstove

As you can see, there’s a woodstove in our home and it is used during the cooler months. Out come my sadirons, which are placed on top of the woodstove. I love using them with sewing. They make the perfect press!

Long sleeved maxi dress

Here in Maryland, it’s starting to get cold! You know, I haven’t made too many things for myself this spring/summer. I have sewed; however, it’s mainly been alterations which is the one thing I hate the most about sewing, Of course, it means that’s the main thing that I’ve accomplished.

True to my word, I have not purchased any clothing since I made the vow that moving forward, I would not be buying any ready made clothing. I much prefer making my own, even though (at times) it can require a lot of work with the designing and sewing process. However, I’m assured a customized article of clothing and they fit perfectly.

For myself cold weather and maxi dresses just go together and so I’m looking at the above pattern as a reference. I’ll tweak it a bit and create my own sloper.

I still need to use the above fabric. I’m torn between creating and designing a maxi dress, maxi skirt or palazzo pants. This evening, I’m hoping oping that I actually get to sew for myself.

How to turn a zigzag stitch into a satin stitch

Oh my goodness has it been busy! I have been sewing; however, it’s mainly been alteration or minor projects like the one I’m about to highlight.

Satin Stitch Emblem.10.19.15

The above emblem. I was asked to attach this to a sweatshirt. While I do have a machine that has a pre-programmed satin stitch, I wanted to see how my Brother PC420 handled changing a zigzag stitch into a satin stitch. The results? It did a fabulous job and I really could not tell the difference. I’m really hoping that I actually get to sew today. First on the list will be serging leggings for my twelve year old daughter.

Here are a few videos that show how to turn a zigzzag stitch into a satin stitch.

Joining the Maxi dress sew-along

A few weeks ago I joined a maxi-dress sew along. I adore maxi dresses and skirts. I think they are so feminine.

At the time I made the commitment, I knew that I would not be able to start immediately; however, my path is now clear and so I’m starting to focus on the appropriate maxi dress to make.

I’m late to the party; however, I’d love to participate in your sew-along. I adore maxi dresses. I won’t get a chance to start my maxi-dress until next week.

I made sure I stopped by Ashley’s virtual home, Sewn By Ashley, and made a comment on the actual post titled My Very First Sew Along. Yes… I am indeed late to the party; however, I will be finished my maxi dress before this month ends. My goodness, it’s hard to believe that this month will be over soon. Where or where has the time gone?

I have until July 31 to complete the outfit. No pressure, right?

Let’s see… the maxi dress I want to make  definitely has to be cool, it’s way too hot for me to be thinking of making something for the cooler months and I want to wear it immediately!
