Sewing myself back into garment construction

The past few days, I’ve been perusing sites to get ideas for a maxi skirt or dress that I’d love to make for myself. I still have some of the fabric left that I used to make that simple embroidered shirt that designed/sewed a few months ago.

Keyhole dress
I love the keyhole detail on this dress

I did not make the above dress, it’s something I stumbled upon when looking for neckline inspiration.  I really like the keyhole detail in this dress, but something seems off with all the bunching? I find it distracting. I don’t think it’s the way it’s draping on the mannequin, but I could be wrong.

Well… I have time to play with a keyhole neckline on a muslin since I have a three day weekend. My 11 yo daughter will be close beside me writing or drawing. Of course, there will be plenty of breaks to do other things. 😉

  1. Q – It is a very odd drape. Are those arm “thingies” attached? Very odd. Talking about using muslin to try a neckline sure reminds me of mom. She loved to design clothes and I REALLY wish I had some of the muslin models she made. As a kid I’d complain about all of the times I had to “try on” the muslin until the pattern was perfected. Then I’d have a one-of-a-kind dress which I was thrilled with! LOL

How awesome is that, that you had your own talented sewist at home? I bet those outfits were amazing!

Regarding the keyhole placement. I noticed that, it looks like it’s coming from the arms somehow. I stumbled upon this featured in a store. Apparently this dress was from the 1970s, it’s listed as vintage and priced a little over $100. I’m guessing someone made that back then?

I have an idea how I’ll improve this, because I’m not liking all the bunching. It looks like it should not be there. I guess that’s why it bothers me so much. It does not look right at all. That side panel inset on the right looks a bit off too. I’m looking at the slight puckering.

  2. Have fun sewing this weekend! I like to sew with my kids close by drawing or something too. It’s fun and they feel a part of what’s going on.

They do love being part of things.

My daughter is sewing also, we went to the fabric store and purchased a few yards for her stash. She’s 11.
