Stocking up on sewing essentials

If you were to stop by my sewing room, you would see a lot of thread.

I use three different types for the various machines that I use, and you want to know something? Even though I have a lot of two of the threads, I’m lacking regular sewing thread. Spools? Sure, I have plenty of those; however, I much prefer the cone thread because of the amount of yardage that you find on them. Well… to remedy that, a few moments ago, I purchased some cone thread for regular sewing.

American & Efird Thread
American & Effird – General purpose thread

The above brand, is the general purpose thread I chose. I ordered it from Wawak. If past orders are an indication, I should be receiving this order tomorrow. This particular thread that I ordered has 6,000 yards of thread on each cone. I chose the standard back and white thread. If I like it, I’ll purchase more.

Now let’s take a look at the cone thread that I do have in abudance. See the above thread, it’s Maxi-Lock, I use that and Gutermann Thread for my Serger and Overlock machines. No, I can’t use this thread in my regular sewing machine. Why? This thread is much  thinner than standard sewing thread, so it would not be as durable. Serger thread is thinner because you are using more than one cone (or spool) of thread for stitching.  I normally use four cones of thread at a time, when I use my Serger or Overcast machine.

I also use cone thread for embroidery, but that thread is shiny and it’s made for one purpose… embroidery. I could use it for general sewing, but that would be silly and very costly since my embroidery thread costs more than the other threads that I use.

Happy Thanksgiving 2014

thanksgiving

Another Thanksgiving has arrived (a first for this site) and  I have more reason than ever to be thankful.

In everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

Today has been a super duper lazy day for my daughter and myself. Besides pulling out a half finished knitting project, gazing wistfully at my loom, cooking a Thanksgiving meal for my daughter and myself, I have done absolutely nothing but rest! You know… sometimes our bodies need that.

Black Friday Deals – One Day Early

Early this morning I did go online and fill in a few sewing accessories gaps. Much to my delight, some of the items on my Wish List were discounted because of Black Friday. A few moments ago, I hopped online and it looks like I’ll be receiving the bulk of my items on Saturday. I’m an Amazon Prime member.

Early Shopping on Black Friday

Tomorrow will be the first year that I am planning to go shopping at an actual brick and mortar store on Black Friday. Early tomorrow, my daughter and I will be going to Jo Ann Fabrics to select a suitable pattern for a dress she wants to make. She  has an upcoming dance next week. Tomorrow, JoAnn’s will be open at 6:00 a.m.

Accessories Update

Once my sewing accessories arrive, I’ll be sure to post a picture of my “sewing accessories haul,” and give reasons why I purchased each one. I’m trying out a new to me product, a fabric folding pen. I did order three more of the Clover Chaco Liner.

I must say, that I like it more than my Chakoner that you see above. I’m really loving the Clover Chaco liner pencil. My only regret is that I haven’t purchased it sooner.

Accessories: I love functional, but pretty is nice too

Two days ago, my 20 pound sadiron and 16 pound old electric pressing iron arrived in the mail! I must say that I’m pleased with both of these items that I bought off of Ebay.

Just look at them! These are solid metal irons,  there’s nothing fancy about them. The one on the left weights 20 pounds and other, the American Beauty iron is 16. Of course, I already gave them a test drive and I must say that I like them a lot. I will be honest and say that I’ll have to get used to the added weight and that’s fine. I’m thrilled to have them.

Below, you’ll see my newest seam ripper. I’m loving its simple elegance.

Not only is it gorgeous, but it’s sharp. So… it’s functional also.

You can’t go wrong with having extra seam rippers. Because of their size they can easily be misplaced, but the good news is that I’m not misplacing them anymore. The fix was simple, just put them back into their designated spot immediately after use!
